Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that primarily affects the face, causing persistent redness, visible blood vessels, acne-like bumps, and frequent flushing. While rosacea is common, it often goes undiagnosed or mistaken for acne or sensitive skin.

At Mittal Dermatology, our board-certified dermatologists specialize in the diagnosis and long-term management of rosacea, helping patients control symptoms, reduce flare-ups, and improve skin appearance and comfort.

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that most commonly affects the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. Symptoms tend to flare and subside over time and may worsen without appropriate treatment.

Rosacea is not contagious, and while there is no cure, early diagnosis and consistent dermatologic care can significantly reduce symptoms and prevent progression.

Rosacea symptoms vary from person to person and may include:

  • Persistent facial redness or flushing
  • Visible blood vessels (telangiectasias)
  • Acne-like bumps or pustules (often mistaken for adult acne)
  • Burning, stinging, or sensitive skin
  • Dry, rough, or irritated skin
  • Eye irritation (ocular rosacea), including redness or dryness

Symptoms may worsen over time if left untreated.

Dermatologists classify rosacea into several subtypes, and patients may experience more than one type:

Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea (ETR)

  • Persistent redness and flushing
  • Visible facial blood vessels

Papulopustular Rosacea

  • Red bumps and pus-filled lesions
  • Often mistaken for acne, but without blackheads

Phymatous Rosacea

  • Thickened, bumpy skin — most commonly affecting the nose (rhinophyma)
  • More common in men

Ocular Rosacea

  • Red, irritated, or watery eyes
  • Eyelid inflammation or stye-like bumps

Accurate diagnosis is essential for effective treatment.

The exact cause of rosacea is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetics, immune system activity, and environmental factors.

Common rosacea triggers include:

  • Sun exposure
  • Hot or cold weather
  • Spicy foods and hot beverages
  • Alcohol
  • Stress and emotional triggers
  • Certain skincare products

Identifying and avoiding individual triggers plays a key role in managing rosacea.

Rosacea is diagnosed through a clinical skin examination and review of symptoms and triggers. There is no single test for rosacea, but a dermatologist can distinguish it from acne, eczema, lupus, or allergic reactions based on appearance and history.

Early diagnosis helps prevent worsening redness, thickening of the skin, and eye involvement.

At Mittal Dermatology, rosacea treatment is personalized based on subtype, severity, and individual skin sensitivity. Treatment plans may include:

Topical Medications

  • Anti-inflammatory and redness-reducing prescription creams or gels
  • Medications that reduce bumps and irritation

Oral Medications

  • Low-dose oral antibiotics for inflammatory rosacea
  • Short-term courses when needed for flare control

Advanced & In-Office Treatments

  • Laser and light-based therapies to reduce redness and visible blood vessels
  • Treatment planning for phymatous changes
  • Eye care coordination for ocular rosacea

Daily Skin Care Guidance

  • Gentle, fragrance-free cleansers
  • Barrier-repair moisturizers
  • Sun protection with mineral sunscreen
  • Avoidance of harsh or exfoliating products

Consistent treatment helps keep symptoms under control and reduces flare frequency.

Although rosacea is a long-term condition, most patients achieve excellent control with proper care. Dermatologic management focuses on:

  • Reducing inflammation
  • Preventing flare-ups
  • Protecting the skin barrier
  • Improving overall skin tone and comfort

Ongoing follow-up allows treatment adjustments as symptoms and triggers change.

Is rosacea the same as acne?

No. While rosacea can cause acne-like bumps, it does not involve clogged pores and requires different treatment.

Can rosacea go away on its own?

Rosacea typically does not resolve without treatment and may worsen over time if unmanaged.

Is rosacea caused by poor hygiene?

No. Rosacea is a medical skin condition unrelated to cleanliness.

Does rosacea affect men and women?

Yes — rosacea affects both, though certain subtypes are more common in specific populations.

At Mittal Dermatology, we provide expert, compassionate care for patients with rosacea. Our approach emphasizes:

  • Accurate diagnosis of rosacea subtypes
  • Individualized treatment plans
  • Evidence-based medical and procedural options
  • Long-term symptom control and skin health

We work closely with patients to help them feel confident and comfortable in their skin.
