Pediatric Dermatology

Mittal Dermatology provides board-certified pediatric dermatology care for infants, children, and adolescents. Children’s skin is not simply a smaller version of adult skin. It differs in structure, sensitivity, immune response, and how conditions present and progress over time. Pediatric dermatology requires specialized training, careful evaluation, and an approach that considers growth, development, and family involvement. Mittal Dermatology delivers evidence-based care focused on accurate diagnosis, clear communication, and long-term skin health.

What is pediatric dermatology?

Pediatric dermatology is the diagnosis and management of skin, hair, and nail conditions that occur from birth through adolescence. Many skin disorders first appear in childhood, and others are unique to pediatric patients. Early identification matters. Some conditions resolve with age, while others require monitoring or ongoing care to prevent complications such as infection, scarring, pigment changes, or functional impairment. Pediatric dermatology also addresses how skin disease affects comfort, sleep, school performance, and self-confidence, particularly during adolescence.

Conditions commonly treated

Mittal Dermatology evaluates and treats a wide range of pediatric skin concerns. These include inflammatory conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, acne in children and teens, rashes of unclear cause, warts and viral skin infections, fungal infections, and bacterial skin conditions. Congenital and acquired birthmarks, including vascular lesions and pigmented lesions, are carefully assessed for medical significance and cosmetic impact. Hair and scalp disorders such as alopecia areata, traction alopecia, and scalp scaling are also managed, as are nail disorders and unusual growths.

Skin changes in children can evolve rapidly. A rash that appears minor may worsen, spread, or signal an underlying issue. Conversely, benign conditions can resemble more serious disease. Accurate diagnosis by a board-certified dermatologist reduces unnecessary treatments and delays in care.

When a child should see a dermatologist

A dermatology evaluation is appropriate when a skin condition is persistent, worsening, recurrent, painful, itchy, or affecting daily activities. Children should also be seen when over-the-counter treatments fail, when a rash is accompanied by fever or discomfort, or when a lesion changes in size, color, or shape. Early dermatologic evaluation is particularly important for infants with widespread rashes, children with severe eczema or infections, and adolescents with acne that may scar.

Routine skin checks may be recommended for children with numerous moles, a family history of skin cancer, or genetic conditions affecting the skin. Proactive care allows for monitoring over time rather than reacting after complications develop.

How pediatric dermatology care differs

Caring for children requires more than clinical expertise. Appointments must be efficient, reassuring, and adapted to a child’s age and comfort level. At Mittal Dermatology, evaluations are performed with attention to minimizing discomfort and anxiety. Explanations are clear and age-appropriate, and parents or caregivers are included in decision-making. Treatment plans consider safety profiles, dosing appropriate for children, and the realities of daily routines at home and school. Sched
